The Heart of Learning: Why Courage and Curiosity Matter Most

In recent workshops with our students, staff, parents, and board members, two fundamental qualities have emerged time and again as the cornerstone of meaningful education: courage and curiosity. These twin pillars don’t just enhance learning, they transform it entirely.

Curiosity. The Spark That Ignites Discovery.

Curiosity is the engine that drives authentic learning. When students approach subjects with genuine wonder, asking “Why does this happen?” or “What if we tried it differently?”, they move beyond memorisation to true understanding. Our workshop discussions revealed how curiosity creates the motivation to persist through challenges and explore new territories of knowledge. It turns passive recipients into active investigators, transforming classrooms into laboratories of discovery.

Courage. The Bridge Between Knowing and Doing

Yet curiosity alone isn’t enough. Learning requires courage, the willingness to take intellectual risks, to voice uncertainties, and to embrace the discomfort of not knowing. Courage allows students to ask questions that might seem “silly,” to attempt problems that stretch their abilities, and to learn from mistakes rather than fear them. Our community workshops highlighted how courage enables learners to step outside their comfort zones, where real growth happens.

What’s emerged strongly from our collaborative discussions is that courage and curiosity aren’t just nice to have qualities, they’re essential for navigating an increasingly complex world. Students who develop these traits become lifelong learners, creative problem-solvers, and confident contributors to their communities.

As we move forward, fostering courage and curiosity will remain central to our College’s direction. When we create environments where it’s safe to wonder, safe to question, and safe to fail, we unlock the full potential of every learner in our community.

The message from our workshops is clear: courage and curiosity aren’t just valuable additions to education; they are education at its very best.

College Hours and Student Supervision

As we settle into the term, we remind families of the College’s expectations regarding school hours and student supervision. The school day commences at 8.40 am for all students, concluding at 3.15 pm for Junior School students and 3.20 pm for Senior School students.

Staff are on duty from 8:20 am, and students should not be on campus before this time unless they are participating in an authorised activity.

At the end of the school day, students are expected to leave promptly unless they are involved in an authorised activity, such as co-curricular programs, teacher meetings, or scheduled detentions.

If parents or guardians are unable to drop off or pick up their Junior School children during standard hours, they are encouraged to contact the College’s Childcare Centre to access our Before School Care (from 6:30 am) or After School Care (until 6:00 pm) programs. For further information or to enrol, please speak with Ms. Lisa Parker, Head of Childcare, or her team on 08 9523 3170 or at childcare@tranby.wa.edu.au.

The Wellbeing Centre is open from 8.40 am to 3.20 pm. For support outside these hours, please get in touch with the College Reception.

We kindly remind families that our teachers use the time before school to prepare for the day’s lessons and learning experiences. As such, they may not be available for unscheduled conversations in the morning. If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please email them to arrange a suitable time to meet. If the matter is urgent, we ask that you contact the College Reception so that a staff member can assist you promptly. Additionally, as our staff are often engaged throughout the day with teaching and other responsibilities, we allow up to 48 hours for email responses. For urgent matters, please contact Reception rather than relying on email.

Just a reminder that Reception is now located in the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) of Tranby Drive, not in the Corporate Services building.

Thank you for your ongoing support in helping us maintain a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment at Tranby College. By working together and following these important procedures, we can ensure that all students are well-supported, prepared for learning, and able to thrive each day.

We value our partnership with families and appreciate your commitment to our College community.

Anzac Assembly

Last week our school community came together to honour the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country during the Anzac Day Assembly. The ceremony was a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience of our veterans. Students and staff paid their respects with a wreath laying ceremony and heartfelt readings.

Senior School Drama Production

Our talented senior students are currently performing in the annual drama production. I had the privilege of watching this year’s play, “The 39 Steps,” this week. This production showcases the incredible acting, directing, and stagecraft skills of our staff and students. The imaginative set design, and captivating performances engaged the audience throughout. Congratulations to everyone involved for their hard work and dedication! If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, the play is also on this Saturday.

Fieldwork Excursion

This week, our senior Biology students embarked on an exciting fieldwork excursion to local bushland. The excursion provided a hands-on learning experience, allowing students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world environments. They conducted various field studies, including population estimates and soil analysis. The sunny weather made the trip even more enjoyable, and students returned with a deeper understanding of the natural world and a renewed appreciation for our environment.

Careers Advisor Bookings

A reminder to all students in Years 9 to 12 that our careers advisor is available for bookings. Whether you need guidance on subject selections, university applications, or career pathways, our advisor is here to help. Don’t miss out on this valuable resource—you can schedule your appointment through contacting Mrs Case to start planning your future!

Beautiful Weather

We have been fortunate to enjoy some truly beautiful weather recently. The clear skies and warm temperatures have provided the perfect conditions for outdoor activities and events. Let’s hope the beautiful weather continues for the Years 7-9 lightening carnivals and the cross-country next week.

A great start to Term 2

We have had a wonderful and busy start to Term 2 in the Junior School!

Our Year 5’s ventured out to visit the Fremantle Prison to support their learning in Humanities and Social Sciences. They had a great day out learning about the history of colonial Australia in the 1800s and this will support the work they are doing in this learning area at school.

This week, our students in Pre Primary to Year 6 were involved in their first Dancesport lesson for the term. Mrs Debbie Sullivan from DanceZone WA was very impressed with how well the students responded and there was a positive buzz coming from the Multi-Purpose Hall as the students learnt their new moves.

Students are also working hard during their Physical Education lessons to practise for the Cross-Country event which will be held on Friday, May 16.

During this week, our students have been reminded of how special our mums and mum figures are in our lives.  There will be some lovely homemade gifts presented on Sunday morning and I am sure you will agree nothing beats the beauty of something special that has been made just for you!

A stall was organised during the week so students could go shopping to buy something for their mums and we are very grateful to our parent helpers who assisted with the stall during the day.

Our Kindergarten children pampered their mums during their Mother’s Day afternoon tea and I’m sure everyone that could attend felt very special.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our mums a lovely and very well-deserved Mother’s Day on Sunday and I hope you all get thoroughly spoilt!

Welcoming Our New Peer Mentor Program

We are delighted to share the launch of our new Peer Mentor Program in the Junior School this term! This exciting initiative aims to nurture a caring and connected school community, where students support and learn from one another in meaningful and enjoyable ways.

Our Year 5 and 6 students will be stepping into the role of peer mentors, offering guidance and friendship to our younger students across the school. Carefully chosen for their empathy and leadership potential, these mentors are receiving ongoing guidance and support to help them develop important leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

During lunchtimes, you’ll find our peer mentors in the Year 1 and 2 playground, engaging younger students in fun and inclusive activities—whether it’s joining in a game of Farmer Sam, reading a story, colouring, drawing, or leading a sports activity.

The Peer Mentor Program is a wonderful opportunity for our senior students to lead by example and make a real difference in the school community. At the same time, it helps to build confidence, empathy, and social connections for our younger students.

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and sense of responsibility already shown by our Year 5 and 6 student leaders. Their involvement is a beautiful reflection of our College values—respect, integrity, collaboration, commitment, and service—in action.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated staff for supporting this program. We are excited to see it grow and thrive in the weeks ahead, and we look forward to sharing its progress with you as the term unfolds.

Indonesian Incursion

A Taste of Indonesian Culture

We recently welcomed a visit from the Indonesian Consulate General in Perth, providing students from Years 3 to 9 with a unique opportunity to experience Indonesian culture through music and dance.

Students in Years 7 to 9 participated in an engaging angklung workshop. Originating from the island of Java, the angklung is a traditional Indonesian musical instrument made entirely from bamboo. Each angklung produces only a single note, so students had to listen closely and work together to perform full melodies. This hands-on experience not only introduced them to a unique aspect of Indonesian heritage but also served as a fun and meaningful lesson in teamwork, and musical collaboration.

Meanwhile, Year 3 students learned two popular Indonesian dances, Poco-poco and Gemu Famire. The dances are traditionally performed in social events, celebrating joy and togetherness. With catchy beats and simple steps, the dances had everyone moving and smiling.

Year 5 students gave an impressive performance of the Ratoh Jaroe dance from Aceh for the visiting Indonesian Consulate staff. This traditional Sumatran dance is known for its precise hand movements, rhythmic clapping, and synchronized seated formation. Often performed in large groups, the dance symbolises unity and discipline. The staff were truly impressed by the students’ coordination and commitment.

The incursion was a wonderful opportunity to connect with and appreciate the richness of Indonesian culture. Terima kasih to the Indonesian Consulate General for visiting Tranby College and sharing such a memorable experience. Hebat!

Junior School Cross Country

The Junior School Cross Country Carnival was a thrilling day filled with energy, determination, and school spirit. From the first race, students gave it their all, showcasing not just their athletic talents but also their strong house spirit support for their fellow students.

The competition between the houses was fierce and incredibly close, with standings shifting dramatically throughout the day. Every point counted, and the overall winner wasn’t decided until the very last race — a true testament to the competitive spirit of our young athletes.
In a day marked by impressive performances, two students stood out in spectacular fashion.

Benjamin King and Matilda Brumby delivered school record-breaking runs in their respective year groups. Their determination and focus were inspirational, and their efforts have been widely recognised by staff and students.

Equally inspiring was the atmosphere of camaraderie and encouragement that was displayed around the course. Whether racing, cheering from the house bays, or helping fellow competitors, every student contributed to the success of the carnival. The sense of community and house pride was wonderful to see, and it made the event even more special.

Congratulations to all who participated and a special shout-out to our winning house, Marra, who triumphed after a nail-biting finish. It was a day to remember, full of spirit, achievement, and the kind of moments that make our school community so special.

‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’. Isabelle is a competitive Jazz, Tap and Ballet dancer and the production allowed Belle the opportunity to highlight and extend her dance ability.

Isabelle appreciates being able to engage in opportunities to develop and showcase her performance skills.

Bush Kindy

On Tuesday 20th May, our Kindy students commenced their first ‘Bush School’ session at the Tuart bushland across the road. They discussed the Noongar Season ‘Djeran’ and were encouraged to look for different signs of this season in the bushland (red flowers blossoming, dewy grass in the morning, light breezes).

The students found a lot of rubbish in the bushland and enjoyed collecting the rubbish to keep the beautiful bush much cleaner than when they arrived. The Kindy students have been exploring the book ‘Wombat Stew’ as part of their literacy program.

They listened to the sounds of the birds who live in the bushland and walked the invisible fence to know their physical boundaries to ensure student safety. The children then listened to ‘Wombat Stew’ and explored the bushland to try and find the wombat stew ingredients.

Among the discoveries were termite nests, yellow sand, and feathers of different colours. This was an exciting opportunity to connect to self, nature, and community. These connections develop a child’s resilience, confidence, physical skills, curious minds, and playful spirits, equipping them for a healthy and happy life. We are excited to share more of our Kindy Bush School adventures.

Thank you to the parent helpers for their assistance and the Kindy staff for fostering a love of nature and curiosity in our students.
