From the Principal

Mrs Emily Goforth

As we prepared to bid farewell to our Year 12s last Friday, it’s fitting that we pause to celebrate the remarkable Class of 2025 – a cohort that has redefined what it means to be Tranby students and leaders.

I would like to share with the community the address that I shared with the Year 6 to Year 12 students, that celebrates what the Year 12 cohort have brought to the College in their time here, but additionally, what the other year groups can learn from this exceptional group of humans.

‘Good morning, staff, parents, guardians and students.

We gather to farewell our Year 12s, the Class of 2025 and while we celebrate their achievements, we also acknowledge their presence, their leadership, and the unique energy they’ve brought to our community.

But before they head out into their next adventure, I want to take a moment to reflect on what this year group has given us, and more importantly, what they can teach all of you who remain.

The Class of 2025 has been many things during their time at Tranby, but if I had to choose one word to describe their legacy, it would be this, present. They showed up. Not just physically, though their attendance at events, but they showed up emotionally, mentally, and wholeheartedly for this school.

They showed up for the younger students. They have helped you get to classrooms, feel like you had people to talk to and cheered you on from the sidelines. That wasn’t random chance, that was intentional leadership. They understood that being a senior student is not about power or privilege, it is about responsibility and care.

They showed up for each other. In a year group, there are always differences, different interests, different friendship groups, different personalities. But this class demonstrated something remarkable, they made space for everyone. When someone was struggling, they noticed. When someone needed support, they provided it. They didn’t always get it perfectly right, but they tried, and that effort mattered. And let’s face it, for the most part, they hit it out of the park.

They showed up for school culture. Whether it was House competitions, DJ’ing sporting carnivals, fundraising events, or simply bringing enthusiasm to Monday period 1, they set a tone. They made it okay to care, to participate and to try your best.

And perhaps most importantly, they showed up for themselves. They pursued their passions, in sport, in the arts, in academics and in service. They asked questions in class, sought help when they needed it, and worked hard to become better versions of themselves. They taught us that vulnerability isn’t weakness, it’s the foundation of growth.

So, to the rest of the school, here’s what you can learn from the Class of 2025:

First, be present. Not just in body, but in spirit. Engage with this community. The opportunities at Tranby are only valuable if you choose to take them. Don’t wait until Year 12 to start leading, start now. Help a younger student. Join that club you’ve been curious about. Raise your hand in class. Your presence matters more than you think.

Second, build bridges, not walls. The Class of 2025 showed us that a strong year group isn’t one where everyone is the same. It’s one where differences are valued and everyone has a place. As you move forward, make the effort to include others, to understand perspectives different from your own, to create a culture where no one feels invisible.

Third, define success on your own terms. This year group pursued diverse paths. They taught us that there isn’t one way to be successful at Tranby. Find what matters to you and pursue it with integrity.

Fourth, when life gets hard, and it will, lean on your community. The Year 12’s faced challenges, both individually and as a group. What set them apart wasn’t the absence of struggle, but their willingness to support one another through it. Don’t suffer in silence. Reach out. Ask for help. That’s not weakness, that’s wisdom.

Finally, leave things better than you found them. The Class of 2025 has left an imprint on this school. As they leave, they are role models, mentors, and friends. When you are in Year 12, ask yourself: What will I leave behind? What will the students who come after me inherit from my time here?

To the Class of 2025, thank you. Thank you for your leadership, your kindness, your energy, and your heart. Thank you for showing the rest of this school what it means to be a Tranby student, not just in name, but in action. You’ve set a standard, and while we’ll miss you tremendously, we’re confident that you’ve prepared the next generation to carry it forward.

To Years 6 through Year 11, the baton has been passed to you. The Class of 2025 has shown you what’s possible. Now it’s your turn to show up, to lead, to care, and to make your own mark on this community.

Class of 2025, as you move on to your next adventure, know that you’ve made a difference. You’ve mattered. And while we’re sad to see you go, we’re excited to watch you take everything you’ve learned here and use it to make a difference out there.

And we will always be cheering for you.

Thank you.’

Social Media Restrictions for Young People

From 10 December 2025, new Australian Government social media regulations will come into effect. These will prohibit many platforms from allowing young people under the age of 16 to create or maintain accounts.

This change reflects growing national concern about the impact of social media on the wellbeing, academic achievement, and social development of young people. Research consistently shows that excessive or early social media use can affect mental health, self-esteem, and sleep, and may hinder real-world social skill development.

Making these changes work will require all of us — parents, caregivers, schools, and young people — to stand together. We encourage families to resist the pressure to set up accounts for children below the age requirement. Every time we stay strong and say “not yet,” we help protect our children’s wellbeing and give them more time to develop the maturity needed for responsible online behaviour.

For practical advice, conversation starters, and platform-specific information, please visit the eSafety Commissioner’s Social Media Age Restrictions Hub. This site provides excellent resources for parents, families, and young people to navigate this transition confidently and safely.

Tranby Day

At the end of Term Three, the College community came together to celebrate Tranby Day — a wonderful tradition that highlights our spirit of unity, service, and joy.

Congratulations to Mrs Cheryl Taylor, this year’s Tranby Day Award recipient, recognised for her outstanding contribution and dedication to the College over many years. Her commitment to our community is deeply appreciated.

The day was filled with colour and energy, capped off by the excitement of the Grand Relay, which Karla House won — well done! The Tranby Day Fair was also a highlight, thanks to the creativity and leadership of our Senior School students who organised engaging stalls and activities for all to enjoy.

Together, we raised $5400, which will be shared between the College and UnitingWA. We extend our gratitude to UnitingWA for joining us on the day and sharing the important work they do to support people across Western Australia.

Tranby Day once again reminded us that when we come together as a community — in kindness, generosity, and celebration — we truly embody what it means to be Tranby.

August has been a vibrant and enriching month for our Senior School students, filled with unforgettable experiences, meaningful connections, and well-deserved recognition.

From 7-14 August, 50 of our Year 9 students embarked on an exciting educational tour of Sydney and Canberra. The itinerary was packed with iconic Australian landmarks and immersive learning opportunities. Students explored the Sydney Opera House, delved into history and culture at various museums, and visited the Australian Parliament House to gain insight into our nation’s political landscape. Highlights also included the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Questacon – the National Science and Technology Centre, the National Library, and the stunning Botanic Gardens. It was a week of discovery, bonding, and inspiration that will no doubt leave a lasting impression on all who attended. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $310.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Next week, we turn our focus to student wellbeing with a dedicated Wellbeing Week. A variety of engaging and uplifting activities are planned, including:
  • Student vs Teacher Sports Matches – a fun way to build community spirit.
  • Music on the Lawn and Just Dance Sessions – to get everyone moving and smiling.
  • Shona the Wellbeing Dog – back by popular demand to bring calm and cuddles.
  • R U OK? Day – a vital reminder to check in with one another and promote mental health awareness wear yellow on Thursday, 11 September.
We encourage all students to get involved and make the most of this week designed to support their emotional and social wellbeing.

On Wednesday, 3 September, we held our Cross Country and Athletics Carnival Assembly, where we celebrated the achievements of our student athletes and recognised outstanding participation and sportsmanship.
A special congratulations goes to Leah Fryer, who was acknowledged for her successful completion of the Curtin Rising Scholars learning experience – a fantastic accomplishment that reflects her dedication and academic curiosity.
We also celebrated a group of Year 9 students who recently participated in a Drone Flying Career Taster program. This hands-on experience introduced them to the exciting world of drone technology and its growing career pathways.

Head of Junior School

Mrs Cheryl Taylor

Last Friday, September 12 the Junior School came together for the biennial Indonesian Assembly.

This assembly is a special event in the Junior School College calendar as all children from Pre-primary through to Year 6 get to participate. We were treated to a wonderful display of learning through the beauty of storytelling, dance and music. The work and commitment of our students to prepare was evident.

We thank our wonderful families for their willingness to support us in the work we do. Transporting children to before and after school rehearsals, assisting with costumes and makeup and being available to help in a variety of other ways was very much appreciated.

The Tranby College Junior School staff need to be congratulated for their tireless dedication and for ensuring our students are provided with learning opportunities that go beyond the classroom.

My heartfelt thanks go to Ibu Indah Hixson. Her passion, dedication and commitment to the learning of the Indonesian language is inspiring and this was clear in what was produced at the assembly. A special thank you also needs to go to Mr Mitch Elliss for his willingness to parade on stage as the very big fat caterpillar!

We were excited to have so many special guests attend. The Indonesian Consulate, Indonesian community groups, members of parliament, AISWA, our Tranby College Chair, and our teachers and students from the Piaget Life Academy & Singapore National Academy in Surabaya, East Java were in attendance. We received wonderful feedback from our special guests, and they were all very impressed with the students skill level in mastering the Indonesian language.

At Tranby, we are indeed most fortunate to have opportunities such as these to come together and celebrate. We know that learning goes beyond the walls of the classrooms and positive memories are created for our students through opportunities such as these.

As the Head of Junior School at Tranby College I am immensely proud and humbled by the work, talents and creative energy of our staff and students and the support of our families. When we work together much can be achieved.

Terima kasih.

Dean of K-2 Junior School

Mrs sam meyerkort

The Junior School has been a hive of activity over the past few weeks, with students taking part in a range of exciting learning experiences and events. Next week promises to be just as eventful, with our Year 5 students heading off to camp at Point Peron, our Kindergarten students participating in their very first Athletics Carnival, our Year 1 students visiting Perth Zoo, and our Year 2 students presenting their class assembly. We extend our sincere thanks to all parents and caregivers for their ongoing support -whether volunteering on excursions, helping with costumes, or attending school events. Your continued support and involvement help to create a vibrant, engaging, and rewarding experience for all our Junior School students.

Early Learning Athletics Carnival

In Week 1, we held our Early Learning Athletics Carnival for students in Pre-primary to Year 2. The afternoon was filled with enthusiasm as students participated in a variety of tabloid events, a 50-metre sprint, and house relays. The highlight of the day was the teacher mascot relay, which brought plenty of laughter and cheering from the crowd. A huge thank you to Mrs Scott for her time, effort, and organisation in making this event such a success.

Pre-primary & Year 1 Swimming Lessons

During Weeks 2 and 3, our Pre-primary and Year 1 students attended daily swimming lessons at State Swim in Secret Harbour. Learning to swim is an essential life skill that supports children’s safety, confidence, and overall well-being. These lessons give every child the opportunity to build crucial water safety knowledge and develop their swimming ability in a safe and supportive environment. Our youngest students have shown wonderful behaviour and resilience throughout the program, managing the busy schedule with great maturity.

Year 2 Excursion – Point Peron

On Tuesday, 21 October, our Year 2 students enjoyed an excursion to Point Peron, where they explored the area’s historic features, including the weapon emplacement, bunker, and communication tower. The group then travelled to the Rockingham foreshore to complete a local history quiz and scavenger hunt. Thank you to our parent helpers for volunteering to help on this engaging and educational day.

Kindergarten 2026 Orientation Day

The following day, Wednesday, 22 October, we hosted our Kindergarten 2026 Orientation Day, welcoming our newest students and families to the College community. This is always an exciting milestone, giving children the chance to meet their teachers and peers, and explore their new classroom and playground. We look forward to officially welcoming our new Kindy students next year!

Year 2 Grandparents Day

On Monday, 27 October, our Year 2 students invited their grandparents into their classrooms to share in traditional games, craft activities, and reading time. This special visit aligned with the Year 2 History unit on toys, technology, and family life in the past, while also celebrating the valued role grandparents play in our Tranby community.

Constable Care Incursion

Last Wednesday, our Junior School students were treated to a fun, engaging, and highly educational experience thanks to the Constable Care Foundation. Through a series of age-appropriate puppet shows and interactive performances, students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 explored important topics around safety, wellbeing, and making positive choices.

Each year group participated in a tailored session: First Aid Heroes taught our youngest students basic first aid skills in a fun and accessible way, while Fun Scary helped Years 1 and 2 navigate and explore the differences between safe/ unsafe scary feelings. The Frenemies session prompted thoughtful conversations around bullying, communication and empathy with our Year 3 and 4 students. Meanwhile, our senior primary students explored online safety, cyberbullying and respectful relationships in the compelling performance called Trending.

The sessions were not only informative but also highly entertaining, with students fully engaged and responding enthusiastically throughout. It was wonderful to see students learning valuable life skills through storytelling, humour, and interactive theatre.

We extend our thanks to the Constable Care Foundation for delivering such a meaningful incursion, and we look forward to welcoming them back in the future.

Sepakbola & Bahasa Incursion

Robbie Gaspar’s Sepak Bola dan Bahasa Incursion

On Wednesday, 24 September, Year 7–9 students learning Indonesian took part in an exciting and inspiring Sepak Bola dan Bahasa incursion led by Robbie Gaspar. Robbie is a former professional soccer player who played in the Indonesian Super League (Liga Super Indonesia) for several years. He is fluent in Bahasa Indonesia and has developed a strong connection with Indonesia and Indonesian people.

Robbie is also the current President of the Indonesia Institute, an organisation that supports stronger connections between Australia and Indonesia. During the incursion, he shared stories from his time living and playing football in Indonesia, as well as his journey of learning the language. He explained how being able to speak Indonesian opened many doors for him—helping him build strong relationships with teammates, adapt to a new culture, and take on roles beyond his football career. He spoke about how language connects many parts of life, such as sport, culture, relationships, and community, and encouraged students to see these links in their own learning.

Students took part in fun soccer games and tricks, using Indonesian words and phrases. This hands-on approach made the session both interactive and enjoyable, helping students actively engage with the language while having fun.

The session was a powerful reminder that learning Bahasa Indonesia not only helps students communicate but also opens more opportunities for travel, study, careers, and meaningful cultural experiences.

Exploring Innovation: Business Students Visit BOP Industries

Earlier this term, a group of our Business students had the exciting opportunity to visit BOP Industries, a leading organisation that inspires young entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to life.

The excursion offered valuable insights into what it takes to launch and grow a business — from identifying a market need to developing creative solutions and building a brand from the ground up. Students also had the privilege of hearing directly from Scott Millar, CEO of BOP Industries, who shared his journey of starting a business with just $100 and turning it into a thriving enterprise.

Tyson Musiwa – “I had a fantastic time at the business event and found it really interesting. The best part was learning all the steps you need to take to start your own business.”

Believe Chikuza – “Our trip to BOP Industries was a very educational experience and it taught us a lot about running or starting a business at a young age. We were honoured to have the CEO, Scott Millar, teach us how to start a business with just $100. This trip was very fun and educational, and we were glad to participate in this type of opportunity.”

The day was filled with energy, innovation, and inspiration and gave students a real-world understanding of how creativity and entrepreneurial thinking can shape the future.

Year 2 Point Peron Excursion

As part of our HASS curriculum the students are discovering local places of historical significance. We had an amazing time exploring Point Peron, viewing the weapon emplacement, bunker and communication tower and answering all of our “I wonder” questions about the historical site. After our trek we headed to the Rockingham Foreshore to complete a local history quiz using the information tiles along the foreshore and a scavenger hunt. It was a very competitive race to find the answers! To finish off our adventure we enjoyed a picnic lunch on the foreshore, followed by lots of laughs as we played on the playground and had a spirited ‘parent versus student’ game of rugby. We headed back to school exhausted but with a greater understanding of our local history and lots of incredible memories.

Year 6 Natural Disasters

Year 6 Natural Disasters Exhibition 2025

Year 6 students were tasked with explaining how natural events can cause sudden changes to the Earth’s surface. They demonstrated how scientific knowledge helps us understand these phenomena, make informed decisions, and reduce their impact. Students also explored historical contributions to our understanding of natural hazards.

As part of the exhibition, students created 3D models representing various natural disasters, including asteroids, volcanic eruptions, pyroclastic surges, twisting tornadoes, flooded cities, bushfires, droughts, tsunamis, and colliding tectonic plates.

Throughout the week, visitors were invited to view the displays and provide feedback to the Year 6 students.

Thank you, Year 6 students and teachers, for putting on that amazing display of natural disasters! We had a delightful time and I’m sure you put in so much effort into those interesting creations. We thank the teachers and parents for helping create and build something based on disasters! There were volcanoes, floods, and earthquakes! It was educational to us and appealing to the eye. We are very excited to come into Year 6 next year and to meet our amazing teachers. I look forward to doing some awesome things together next year! Thank you so much again for that wonderful experience! – Lucy Year 5

Today we were invited to view the Year 6 Natural Disaster projects. They were totally inspiring and sparked lots of curious conversations in 3M!

Students came away with new questions, ideas, and a deeper interest in how natural disasters affect people and places.

A big thank you to Year 6 for sharing their learning with us—we loved it!

The projects on natural disasters were amazing, and my favourite exhibit was the erupting volcano. I learnt that a volcano can remain dormant for thousands of years and still erupt. Thank you for letting us see them. -— Irfan

I went to see the Year 6 natural disaster projects. My favourite part was when the volcano erupted. I was amazed at how hard the Year 6’s worked. It was incredible! I also learnt a new fact: most volcanoes are under water. — Mayann

Dear Year 6 students,

We loved your natural disasters display. They were very interesting and educational. It was very smart of you to think up all these fascinating and interesting ideas. They were cool, wonderful and fun and we all enjoyed them. I loved the different ideas, and everyone was different in their own way. They were all amazing and awesome and I have no idea how I could do that. I can’t wait until I am in Year 6. – Joelene Year 5

The water features were very cool. I really like the Earthquake ones with dinosaurs. Caleb Year 2

All of the projects were amazing, excellent and cool! I really liked the volcano ones that put materials to make the lava explode. The slime was my favourite. Daly Year 2

I loved them all, my favourite was the avalanche. I liked the tornado that could spin around also. Kyle Year 2

Today we went to the year six classrooms to look at their natural disaster builds. They were amazing! Some of them even had a technological feature. For example, some people made their volcanoes erupt! It was very educational. I learnt lots of cool, fascinating facts from their posters hanging off the tables telling us everything about the disaster. After looking at every creative piece, I couldn’t wait for next year when I am in Year 6. – Ava Year 5

All of the natural disaster builds were amazing but my favourite was the volcano where you would put chemicals in to make it erupt. – Franky Year 5

Thank you for letting our class come to your classroom I really liked Hayden’s one it was really cool, and I also liked Seth’s but I do have some concerns for his devil duck in the natural disaster. Thank you so much. – Anne Year 5

I loved all of the natural disasters! I especially loved the one where it’s raining where they used actual water. I also loved all of the volcano especially the ones where they actually explode, I thought they were so cool! I’m so excited for next year to be able to do this. – Amelia Year 5

I LOVED Lenika’s EXPLODING volcano, and how there was a balloon that was covered in slime and how she made it come out and back into the volcano. – Gabby Year 5

I really liked Indie M’s tsunami and Lenika’s exploding volcano! I CAN’T WAIT TO MAKE MY ONE NEXT YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amelia Year 5

I loved that they all did something unique. Even when some of them had the same disaster they were all made out of different things! – Archie Yea 4

From PPB

“I like the exhibition; my favourite one was the volcano because the Lava was really hot”.

School Nurse Update

I wanted to take a moment to share a couple of important reminders and updates regarding student health and wellbeing.

1. General Wellbeing and Illness
To reduce the transmission to other students, we kindly ask that you keep your child home if they are unwell. If your child experiences any gastro symptoms (such as vomiting or diarrhoea), they should not return to school until at least 24 hours after symptoms have fully resolved as a minimum.

2. Medical Information Updates
We ask that all parents review and update their child’s medical information to ensure we have the most accurate and current details. If there have been any changes in your child’s medical condition over the past year, such as a new diagnosis or medication, please ensure to update through the parent portal. This also includes consent for us to administer medications at school.

For students with asthma:

  • Please ensure an up-to-date Asthma Action Plan is provided to the school.

  • It is essential that your child brings their reliever medication (e.g., Ventolin) to school each day, along with their action plan.

Keeping this information current helps us better support your child’s health and safety during school hours.

Kindest regards,

Melissa Quinlivan, Sophie Coleman

New Timetable

A Unified Timetable for 2026

From the beginning of 2026, Tranby College will introduce a new whole-school timetable, bringing the Junior and Senior Schools into a single, unified structure. This is an important step in strengthening our sense of community and enhancing learning continuity across all year levels.

Under the new model, the school day will run from 8.40 am to 3.20 pm for all students, with two 30-minute breaks standardised across the College. Each day will include five learning periods of 65 minutes, ensuring high-quality instructional time and opportunities for deeper learning. Assemblies in the Junior School will remain on Fridays, and Senior School assemblies will move to Friday.

For the Senior School, the timetable will move from a two-week to a single-week cycle, and students in Years 11 and 12 will shift from a seven-line to a six-line structure. This streamlined approach simplifies scheduling, enhances balance in learning time, and creates consistency across the College.

By aligning our daily routines, we are fostering smoother transitions for students, more cohesive whole-school events, and greater collaboration among staff. This unified timetable marks another important step in empowering excellence in teaching, learning, and wellbeing at Tranby College.

Please contact your child’s classroom teacher or Mentor if you have any questions.
