Junior School Sport
Building Skills and Promoting Fitness
Our Junior School sports program is designed to develop the skills necessary for students to adopt lifelong physical fitness and wellbeing. By offering a variety of sporting opportunities, we encourage our students to be active, have fun and find a sport they enjoy. This helps with the development of their social and problem-solving skills, as well as building student confidence and self-esteem.
We further encourage a love of sport by facilitating specialist clinics with guest coaches that have the passion, skills and expertise to provide strong guidance and mentorship.
Sports on Offer
Our sports offering changes regularly and varies for each year group. Whilst this is the case, students will have the opportunity to experience the following during their time at Tranby:
The focus for Pre-primary to Year 2 students is the development of Fundamental Movement Skills, which are the foundation for competent and confident participation in physical activity. This includes running, jumping, throwing, catching and kicking. To develop social skills, such as sharing, as well as the ability to follow rules and play fairly, students also participate in a range of co-operative games.
Students participate in swimming lessons from Pre-primary to Year 4.
From Years 3 to 6 we continue to develop Fundamental Movement Skills, however, greater emphasis is placed on applying movement and strategies within game situations.
Our students experience:
- Cross Country
- Ultimate Frisbee
Carnivals and Sports Days
From Kindy to Year 6, a variety of Carnivals and Sports Days create fun, competitive experiences for our students. These are:
- Inter-house Cross Country: Pre-primary to Year 6.
- Inter-house Athletics: Pre-primary to Year 6.
- Inter-house Swimming: Years 3 to 6.
- Sports Day: Kindy (own day).
Our partnership with Independent Primary School Heads of Australia (IPSHA) provides students with the opportunity to participate in Inter-school carnivals and competitions for Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Golf, Swimming and Touch Rugby.
Each semester, a number of clubs and activities are available to build skills and experience outside of school hours. These include sporting opportunities to train and develop skills. Visit our co-curricular page for more information.
