Important Dates

From the Principal

Mrs Emily Goforth

One of the many absolute pleasures I get to enjoy as Principal of Tranby, is witnessing courage in action as students and staff step beyond their comfort zones. There is profound beauty in choosing discomfort over complacency, and in embracing the unfamiliar rather than clinging to the known. I know I have touched on this topic before; however, I feel it is important to revisit this topic now more than ever.

Our College Production of “The 39 Steps” showcases students willingly stepping into vulnerability on stage. They risk judgment and mistakes, yet they show up and transform. Students who once feared stepping on stage, now do so with conviction. This is not despite discomfort, but because of it.

The newly established Tranby Basketball Club presents another example of embracing discomfort. Students who have never played before, are now practicing alongside experienced players. What matters isn’t perfection but participation. Those first steps onto the court represent pure courage, with every practice building skills and confidence.

In our Mission, Vision, and Values workshops that I have been holding with students, many approached discussions initially with uncertainty. Yet by voicing different perspectives and thoughtfully considering varied viewpoints, we’re creating a stronger, more inclusive vision for our College through that productive discomfort.

I want to emphasise, feeling uncomfortable isn’t just acceptable, it is necessary for growth. Our brains develop most significantly when challenged. That flutter of nervousness before trying something new isn’t a warning to retreat, but your growth edge introducing itself.

The beauty in discomfort lies not just in the growth it produces, but in the courage it reveals. When we step onto unfamiliar stages, courts, or intellectual territories, we discover capabilities within ourselves we might never have known existed.

Honouring ANZAC Day at Tranby College

Last week, the Tranby College community came together to honour ANZAC Day in a moving ceremony for students from Years 3 to 12. The assembly was a time for students, staff, and families to join in remembrance of those who have served and sacrificed for our country, reflecting our values of Respect, Integrity, Service, Commitment, and Collaboration.

Our Year 5 and 6 students led us through the powerful story of Simpson and his Donkey, highlighting the courage and compassion shown on the battlefields of Gallipoli. Their storytelling was both respectful and heartfelt, serving as a reminder of the bravery displayed by ordinary Australians in extraordinary circumstances.

Chaplain Steve shared a reading from John 15:12–14, which speaks to the greatest love one can show — to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. This message of selflessness and sacrifice resonated deeply with all in attendance.

The ceremony also featured a special address from Chief Petty Officer Anita Rayner, a parent and member of the Royal Australian Navy, who spoke with great pride and reflection on the meaning of ANZAC Day.

The solemn sounds of The Last Post and The Rouse, beautifully played by Michael Baker, brought a profound stillness over the crowd as we stood in silence to remember.

I would like to thank all those involved in the assembly for their contribution to this meaningful occasion. I also commend our students for the poise and stillness they displayed throughout the ceremony. Their respect and reverence were a true reflection of the spirit of ANZAC and the values we uphold at Tranby.

At Tranby, we remain committed to honouring the spirit of the ANZACs, reflecting on their legacy, and living out our values each day.

Anzac Assembly

Last week our school community came together to honour the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country during the Anzac Day Assembly. The ceremony was a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience of our veterans. Students and staff paid their respects with a wreath laying ceremony and heartfelt readings.

Senior School Drama Production

Our talented senior students are currently performing in the annual drama production. I had the privilege of watching this year’s play, “The 39 Steps,” this week. This production showcases the incredible acting, directing, and stagecraft skills of our staff and students. The imaginative set design, and captivating performances engaged the audience throughout. Congratulations to everyone involved for their hard work and dedication! If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, the play is also on this Saturday.

Fieldwork Excursion

This week, our senior Biology students embarked on an exciting fieldwork excursion to local bushland. The excursion provided a hands-on learning experience, allowing students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world environments. They conducted various field studies, including population estimates and soil analysis. The sunny weather made the trip even more enjoyable, and students returned with a deeper understanding of the natural world and a renewed appreciation for our environment.

Careers Advisor Bookings

A reminder to all students in Years 9 to 12 that our careers advisor is available for bookings. Whether you need guidance on subject selections, university applications, or career pathways, our advisor is here to help. Don’t miss out on this valuable resource—you can schedule your appointment through contacting Mrs Case to start planning your future!

Beautiful Weather

We have been fortunate to enjoy some truly beautiful weather recently. The clear skies and warm temperatures have provided the perfect conditions for outdoor activities and events. Let’s hope the beautiful weather continues for the Years 7-9 lightening carnivals and the cross-country next week.

A great start to Term 2

We have had a wonderful and busy start to Term 2 in the Junior School!

Our Year 5’s ventured out to visit the Fremantle Prison to support their learning in Humanities and Social Sciences. They had a great day out learning about the history of colonial Australia in the 1800s and this will support the work they are doing in this learning area at school.

This week, our students in Pre Primary to Year 6 were involved in their first Dancesport lesson for the term. Mrs Debbie Sullivan from DanceZone WA was very impressed with how well the students responded and there was a positive buzz coming from the Multi-Purpose Hall as the students learnt their new moves.

Students are also working hard during their Physical Education lessons to practise for the Cross-Country event which will be held on Friday, May 16.

During this week, our students have been reminded of how special our mums and mum figures are in our lives.  There will be some lovely homemade gifts presented on Sunday morning and I am sure you will agree nothing beats the beauty of something special that has been made just for you!

A stall was organised during the week so students could go shopping to buy something for their mums and we are very grateful to our parent helpers who assisted with the stall during the day.

Our Kindergarten children pampered their mums during their Mother’s Day afternoon tea and I’m sure everyone that could attend felt very special.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our mums a lovely and very well-deserved Mother’s Day on Sunday and I hope you all get thoroughly spoilt!

Student Highlight - Georgia Jackson

We are proud to congratulate Georgia Jackson, Year 12 (2024), whose artwork Flow has been selected for exhibition at the Art Gallery of Western Australia as part of The West Australian Pulse. This prestigious annual showcase highlights 61 outstanding works by Year 12 Visual Arts graduates from 37 schools across the state. The exhibition celebrates the creativity, insight, and promise of Western Australia’s next generation of artists.

Georgia explains her deeply personal artwork in her artist statement.

‘Flow represents my journey into mindfulness, capturing the creative practices I use to calm my overactive mind. Recently diagnosed with ADHD, I now understand that activities like drawing and embroidery help me escape my constant overthinking. The artwork features three practices that bring me into the present moment: a pencil drawing requiring patience and time, an embroidery of a crane symbolising hope, and the suggestion of origami. Each element embodies the concept of ‘flow’ where I am completely immersed, losing track of time and self, and achieving a sense of calm and focus.’

The exhibition runs until 31st August 2025.

Year 5 Excursion - Fremantle Prison

On Monday 5th May, the Year 5 students went to Fremantle Prison for an excursion. The trip from Tranby College was 45 minutes, but the ride felt like a lifetime! Before we explored the old, fragile prison, we put our bags safely into the lockers and got into two separate groups. Our tour guides were Elle & Sarah.

There was a big, black, old gate that led everyone into the prison. First, we went to check out the cells, and they looked incredibly old, crummy, and rigid. We learnt about how convicts would eat, drink, and how they survived in these horrible conditions. Then we went out into the punishment yard! The walls had parallel numbers that the convicts would have to run between for one hour. They purposely skipped the numbers 6 & 16 so if the guard told the convict to run to either 6 or 16, and the convict told the guard that there was not a 6 or 16, they would get the cat of nine tails as punishment just for talking.

The escape stories were fun! We learnt about Moondyne Joe. He escaped many times. One time he escaped using a wild horse that had roamed into the paddock, he fed and tamed the horse. All the guards knew what Moondyne Joe did but before they could put him in a cell, he escaped on the horse. They found him again, and again, and again. He died at the old age of 83.

After our tours, we went to Esplanade Park for lunch and a play. It was about 10 minutes away so compared to the other bus ride, it felt like 2 seconds. It was very peaceful and quiet when we were eating our lunch and having a chat with our friends, until we were allowed to play! We had a fun time on the big playground. Once we were going back to school, it felt like another lifetime. We really enjoyed our experience at Fremantle prison, and thank our tour guides, and parents that came to help us and we really appreciate it!
